But the dazzle of a balayage is the result of education, not luck. In addition to the artistry your stylist brings to the chair, their understanding of biology and chemistry is what gives you that perfect color you've been searching for. Here's how Jacqueline Villa, owner of J&J Studio in Cerritos, California, breaks down her most recent makeover. Talk about chemistry and art in action! "I started in the back from nape to crown. I used my favorite Redken Flashlift lightener with 30 volume for balayaging and 20 volume for the babylights. I used the balayage in foil and baby-lighting technique, alternating throughout. Once I got to the front, I used a face-framing baby-lighting technique to get that pop of brightness around her face. When lifted to a level 8/9, I rinsed her out and towel dried. I separated her face frame and tapped a 6N around the hairline for a more natural grow out and a 9P midshaft to ends. I then color melted the rest with 7N+8V on root. A level 8V was used on the midshaft and 9P on the ends." If you're interested in the effect here, be sure to work with your stylist so they can customize an approach and look for you. ■ associatedhairprofessionals.com 9 M A K E O V E R B R E A K D O W N Balayage is a technique in which a hairstylist freehand paints lightener or color onto a client's hair. The technique is most often used to create a sun- kissed, natural look, but can also be utilized with unnatural rainbow colors for a bolder statement. by Ali Davidson
