associatedhairprofessionals.com 7 Modern Texture A modern take on the shag is back, cut shoulder-length or above. Texture is huge, with a jagged interior and curl enhanced with sprays or perms. Cucinotta says, "We use sea salt spray to encourage waves and give extra volume. The hair will have separation and mobility with great shine. Take advantage of any natural texture you have or consider a perm. Today's perms can give a natural-looking wave, not the tight curls of years past." Bangs can be present or not with the shag; add another textural component with a wispy edge or a center part. A form of the mullet is even emerging again with edgy, sleek architectural layers or a messy tomboy style with heavy texture balancing length and pixie bangs. Don't forget the scrunchie! Volume and Length Natural, wash-and-wear long hair is popular with an unadorned finish. No hot tools needed! Layers can be face framing but not hard edged. Body and movement are achieved with a mix of layers, mostly at mid-length and allowing waves to fall perfectly. Layers reveal texture and color and show the transition of highlights and curls. Natural texture continues to trend with curls getting even bigger. Big 1980s volume is back, yet with manageability. Cucinotta says, "Use a mousse or gel for volume with a medium hold hairspray to finish. Try products that won't feel stiff and can be reworked." Glowing Hair Color Flamboyage is one of the latest hair color techniques promising infinite chromatic possibilities of painting the hair with natural light. It is a combination of the French balayage technique of hand painting hair color individually, with ombre blending. The method offers soft peek-a-boo highlights for a low-maintenance and natural result. "Flamboyage is a great way to update a client's hair color seasonally without a dramatic change," Cucinotta says. "We can now offer creative new multidimensional highlights and lowlights to give different accents. The client is not locked in with a completely new hair color for each season, which can overprocess the hair. This technique gives dimension and depth, adding all-over color or just a little face framing." ■ Stephen Cucinotta of L'Equipe offers these latest hair trends.
